About NIMHANS
National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) was conferred the status of an ‘Institute of National Importance’. Institute is one of the prestigious Institution for M.Phil Clinical Psychology Course.
NIMHANS was declared a ‘Deemed to be University’ by UGC in 1994 and has since been an autonomous and independent university.
It is considered as an Institute of National Importance by Act of Parliament in the Government of India Gazette Notification in 2012. Notwithstanding anything contained in the Indian Medical Council Act (MCI), 1956, the Rehabilitation Council of India Act (RCI), 1992, the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947, and the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956, the medical degrees, diplomas, nursing degrees and certificates granted by the Institute under this Act shall be recognized medical qualifications for the purposes of the Acts aforesaid and shall be deemed to be included in the Schedule to the respective Acts.
NIMHANS provides a multidisciplinary approach in patient care, training and research in areas of mental health and neurosciences. There are several manpower development programs being undertaken at NIMHANS with the aim to bring together and develop fields of behavioral, neuro, biological and ancient health sciences/systems in a single institute.

COURSE OUTLINE
M.Phil in Clinical Psychology
- Two year regular fulltime course
- Lectures, class-seminars and self-study assignments as per the syllabus/coursework
- Opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team
- Emphasis on clinical training: work with patients in in-patient and out-patient settings
- Training to develop skills in diverse psychological assessments and therapies
- Receive one-on-one supervision from faculty with respect to patient care, specifically in assessments and therapies
- Participate in psychotherapy group-based training under one-on-one supervision
- Trainees go through a rotation of different clinical postings to explore different specialty areas in clinical psychology
- Participate in departmental case conferences, seminars and journal clubs and interdepartmental teaching programs with opportunity to present
- Receive experience in research by working on a dissertation as per the course requirement
Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
- Three-five years fulltime course
- Lectures and self-study assignments as per their syllabus/coursework
- Complete their coursework requirements and qualify for the Pre-PhD examination
- Complete the Pre-PhD examination and continue research study
- Opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team
- Emphasis on clinical training in the first two years
- Supervise and teach MPhil trainees and participate in outpatient and inpatient services
- Assist faculty in coordination of workshops and other programs
- Receive one-on-one supervision from faculty
- Participate in doctoral research presentations in the department
- Participate in department-level seminars and journal clubs
- Take lectures for students of other mental health professionals in NIMHANS
- Present papers in conferences and publish papers on PhD work
QUALIFICATION ELIGIBILITY
Admission in M.Phil in Clinical Psychology and PhD in Clinical Psychology is based on Entrance Examinations held by NIMHANS.
