Psychologists help people understand, accept, and/or change their behavior. They have been trained to use tests and interviews as diagnostic and assessment techniques to determine an individual’s personality strengths and weaknesses, attitudes, and interests. The psychologist uses different therapeutic methods to assist the client in changing behavior, and may also counsel family members and other therapeutic personnel on how to best work with the client.

Clinical Psychologist: According to Arvind Kumar Otta, The clinical psychologist usually works with more severely disturbed and chronic patients, who are often institutionalized and may be on mood controlling drugs. The clinical psychologist uses psychotherapy and client management techniques to achieve changes in behavior and thinking. Some clinical psychologists work in physical rehabilitation settings, treating patients with spinal cord injuries, chronic pain or illness, stroke, arthritis, and neurological conditions. Others help people deal with times of personal crisis, such as divorce or the death of a loved one. Clinical psychologists often interview patients and give diagnostic tests. They may provide individual, family, or group psychotherapy and may design and implement behavior modification programs. Some clinical psychologists collaborate with physicians and other specialists to develop and implement treatment and intervention programs for patients. Other clinical psychologists work in universities and medical schools, where they train graduate students in the delivery of mental health and behavioral medicine services.
Counseling Psychologist: The counseling psychologist tends to deal with clients who have less severe, short-term, or situational emotional problems. Typically, these clients are living at home and working, but are unhappy about some aspect of their lives such as their marriages, jobs, life goals, or relationships. The counseling psychologist helps clients with reality problems and with planning for the future.
Child Psychologist: The child psychologist specializes in the development problems of children. The child psychologist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and learning problems.
Industrial/organizational psychologist: The industrial/organizational psychologist works in a business or industrial setting or consults with persons in those settings.

After graduation need an accredited two-year postgraduate qualification (majoring in counseling, clinical, educational, developmental, forensic, organizational or neuropsychology). Final step to become a Psychology is accredited M. Phil or PhD Degree. PhD degree culminates in a dissertation based on original research. Courses in quantitative research methods, which include the use of computer-based analysis, are an integral part of graduate study and are necessary to complete the dissertation. The PsyD may be based on practical work and examinations rather than a dissertation. In clinical or counseling psychology, the requirements for the doctoral degree include at least a 1-year internship.

These M. Phil or Ph. D courses must be accredited by the Rehabilitation counseling of India. The various universities have different prerequisites and some have flexible entry requirements or offer external study. Individuals wishing to practice as a psychologist in India are required to be registered with the Rehabilitation counseling of India. Psychologists in independent practice or those who offer any type of patient care-including clinical, counseling, and school psychologists. Clinical and counseling psychologists usually require a doctorate in psychology, the completion of an approved internship, and 1 to 2 years of professional experience.
