The National Testing Agency, or NTA has opened Ph.D. applications and will be conducting a common Entrance Test for Ph.D. in various subjects, including Psychology. At present, the list includes Delhi University (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) for NTA Ph.D. Entrances.

Out of these four central universities, currently DU, and BHU are offering Ph.D. in Psychology.

The NTA is responsible for registering candidates, conducting the entrance examination, declaring, posting, and inviting challenges to the answer key, and declaring the final results. The participating university may conduct their individual counseling based on the Ph.D. Entrance Test scores.

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. Applications for Psychology at DU, and BHU

The candidates who had cleared their Master’s / equivalent examination or appearing in 2023 are eligible for the Ph.D. Entrance Test. Further university-specific eligibility criteria are mentioned below-

  • Delhi University
    • Master’s Degree (Psychology/ Applied Psychology/ Behavioural & Cognitive Sciences/ Human Development and Family Studies) from a recognized University
  • Banaras Hindu University
    • Master’s degree in the concerned subject OR (ii) Master’s degree in any one of the allied subjects.

Application Fee

Candidates must pay the following fees based on their category to complete the application process-

  • General: ₹1,200
  • OBC-NCL/Gen-EWS: ₹1,100
  • SC/ST/Third Gender/PwBD: ₹1,000

Examination Details

Here are the key specifics you need to know about the test-

  • Exam Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
  • Duration of Exam: 180 minutes
  • Language: English
  • No. of Questions: 100
  • Each question will carry 4 marks
  • Negative Marking: -1 mark
  • The paper will have two sections:
    • Section I: Research Methodology
    • Section II: Subject Specific

Examination Schedule

The Ph.D. Entrance Test will be conducted in two shifts for four days. The Psychology Exam will be conducted on the second shift of Day 2.

A. Candidates should follow the UGC NET-JRF syllabus for this Entrance Test. There is no new topic/concept specified for this test.

Q. Is there any age restriction for the Ph.D. Entrance Test?

A. no age restriction is set by NTA for candidates intending to take the Ph.D. Entrance Test in 2023. Nevertheless, candidates must meet the age requirements specified by the University to which they wish to gain admission.

A. Yes. Certain seats are reserved in accordance with the rules prescribed by the Government of India.

  • Gen-EWS: 10%
  • OBC-NCL: 27%
  • SC: 15%
  • ST: 7.5%
  • PwD: 5% seats in each of the GENERAL, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST category seats.

Q. Till when the Entrance score be valid?

A. The NTA score of Ph.D. Entrance Test will be valid for the academic year 2023-24 only.
