RCI Recognized BSc Clinical Psychology Final update!
The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) has officially announced the launch of the B.Sc Clinical Psychology (Hons.) course from the academic session of 2024-25. This step marks a significant role in enhancing mental health education in India. The course aims to prepare students to become skilled but entry-level professionals in the field of clinical psychology.
Background and Need for the Course
Mental health issues are a growing concern globally, and India is no exception. It is well understood that mental illnesses can be prevented with timely intervention and appropriate awareness. The need for professionals who can work in the field of mental health has been felt for a long time. RCI has recognized this demand and taken steps to address it by launching the B.Sc. Clinical Psychology (Hons.) course.
This course is designed to create a workforce capable of offering first-level mental health support, promoting mental health awareness, and identifying mental health issues early.
Course Structure and Duration
The B.Sc. Clinical Psychology (Hons.) is a four-year undergraduate program (only full-time regular). This course cannot be offered in distance learning or virtual/online modes. This ensures that students get the practical experience and exposure they need. The course structure has been developed keeping in mind the sensitive nature of clinical psychology and the need for students to gain hands-on experience in real clinical settings.
Eligibility and Admission Process
Students who have completed their 12th standard with a science stream are eligible to apply for the B.Sc. Clinical Psychology (Hons.) program.
Admission will be based on the marks obtained in an entrance test conducted by respective universities or institutions.
Roles and Responsibilities
Upon completion of the course, the candidates will be registered with the RCI and will hold the title of “Clinical Assistant (Clinical Psychology).” Their primary role will be to serve as frontline mental health workers. They will be trained to conduct mental health awareness programs, basic screening for early identification of mental illnesses, and psychoeducational activities.
However, it is important to note that they will work under the supervision of clinical psychologists and will not engage in independent practice. They will not be allowed to conduct deep psychological assessments, psychological therapies, or provide certifications independently.
Importance of Faculty and Infrastructure
Institutions offering this course must have a qualified faculty team. A minimum of three full-time clinical psychology faculty members is required, and they must be registered with RCI. Additionally, institutions must have their own clinical setup or an MoU with a clinical facility to ensure students receive adequate training in real-life scenarios.
